Jacob Elordi, aged 26, discussed his involvement in the Netflix rom-com trilogy during an interview for GQ’s Men of the Year issue.
While acknowledging that The Kissing Booth trilogy played a crucial role in launching his career, Elordi admitted he doesn’t view the experience with nostalgia. He expressed his initial reluctance to participate, stating, “I didn’t want to make those movies before I made those movies.” Describing them as “ridiculous” and more of an escape than a universal experience, Elordi played the role of bad boy football star Noah Flynn in the film series.
Despite The Kissing Booth being one of his early films, Elordi became dissatisfied after committing to the sequels. He referred to the concept of doing a project “for them” as a potential trap, cautioning against losing originality in the pursuit of commercial success.
Addressing the backlash he received for expressing regret over the role, Elordi defended his perspective, questioning how caring about one’s output could be considered pretentious. He emphasized the importance of valuing people’s time and criticized the act of knowingly delivering subpar content for profit.
Elordi credited his current happiness to working on projects that fulfill him creatively, such as Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla and Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn. He previously expressed regret over creative decisions in The Kissing Booth, including a dispute over his character’s smoking habits.
Following his work on the Netflix trilogy, Elordi landed a role as Nate Jacobs in HBO’s Euphoria. Looking ahead, he is slated to expand further into film with projects like Priscilla and Saltburn. However, he revealed his disinterest in playing Superman, citing a preference for creating content aligned with his own viewing preferences and expressing discomfort with the darker tone associated with the superhero role.
