Paul Ridd, the head of acquisitions at Picturehouse Entertainment, has been selected as the new director of the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
Scheduled to commence his role in December, Ridd will helm the festival during its 77th anniversary in August 2024, with specific dates yet to be disclosed.
Following financial challenges, the festival made a comeback with its 76th edition earlier this year under the leadership of Kate Taylor. However, Taylor did not reapply for the position, paving the way for Ridd to take charge.
In his capacity as director, Ridd will be tasked with establishing, developing, and managing the festival’s operations. This includes implementing fundraising strategies, delivering a budget, and devising a multi-year plan. Additionally, he will collaborate with the board to set the overall strategic direction and sustainability goals, formulate the festival’s strategy and vision, and build a dynamic new team.
During his tenure at Picturehouse, Ridd played a pivotal role in the release of notable films such as “God’s Own Country,” “Happening,” “Scrapper,” and “Anatomy of a Fall,” which won the Palme d’Or in 2023. Ridd has also served as a program advisor to the BFI London Film Festival since 2018 and an international consultant for the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival since 2019.
Andrew Macdonald, chair of the Edinburgh International Film Festival, expressed delight in Ridd’s appointment, noting his passion for film and entrepreneurial skills. Macdonald looks forward to supporting Ridd in leading the festival into a bright future with a focus on outstanding films, filmmakers, and engaged audiences.
In response, Ridd expressed his excitement about joining the Edinburgh International Film Festival during a pivotal moment in its history. He envisions steering the festival toward a vibrant future characterized by world-class films, filmmakers, and engaged audiences. Ridd acknowledged the mentorship of Picturehouse MD Clare Binns and aimed to emulate her dedication, passion, and genuine love for cinema in guiding the festival forward.
