Paddington, the beloved bear of Britain, is gearing up for a grand entrance into the theatrical world with the much-anticipated production, tentatively titled “Paddington: The Musical.”
Currently undergoing development, this musical marvel is a collaborative effort between Sonia Friedman Productions, Studiocanal, and Eliza Lumley Productions in association with Universal Music U.K. The inspiration for the musical draws from the timeless tales penned by Michael Bond and the acclaimed film series crafted by Studiocanal and Heyday Films.
Tasked with composing the music and lyrics is Tom Fletcher from McFly, while the script is in the capable hands of Jessica Swale, the Olivier Award-winning playwright renowned for her works such as “Nell Gwynn” and “Blue Stockings.” Steering the creative direction is director Luke Sheppard, celebrated for his involvement in productions like “& Juliet” and “The Little Big Things.” Currently undergoing workshops, the musical is slated to make its grand debut in the United Kingdom in 2025.
Expressing their enthusiasm, Friedman and Lumley shared, “It is a privilege to be creating a new musical about this adorable and beloved little bear with such a remarkable team.” They highlighted Paddington’s unique ability to perceive the best in humanity through his innocent eyes, emphasizing the overarching theme of love and kindness prevailing when hearts and minds are open to each other. The production aims to transport audiences of all ages into Paddington’s world, filled with antics, escapades, and the endearing characters created by Michael Bond.
Ann Marsh, CEO of Studiocanal, expressed immense delight, praising the vision and talent of Sonia and Eliza. Their deep understanding and passion for Paddington, a character etched by Michael Bond over six decades ago, promise to infuse a fresh and innovative charm into the beloved bear’s timeless adventures on the stage.
