Mongrel Media has secured the Canadian distribution rights for the film “The Birds Who Face Mortality,” crafted by Indo-Canadian filmmaker Sanjay Patel. Patel, renowned for his work on the award-winning “Union Leader,” celebrated at the Sao Paolo and Zurich festivals, takes audiences on a poignant journey in his latest venture.
The narrative unfolds around the Spence brothers, Adam and Ryan, steered by their financial pursuits. Their anticipation revolves around the imminent passing of their ailing father, William, envisaging using their inheritance to acquire a restaurant business. Post William’s demise, a startling revelation surfaces—their father bequeathed his inheritance to the indigenous people of Bird, a rustic hamlet in Northern Canada. Retrieving their wealth mandates persuading Chief Ed Whitford to relinquish the estate. The brothers embark on a trek to northern Canada, unaware that this expedition would unleash unforeseen events, spiraling beyond their control.
Featuring a predominantly indigenous cast, including Adam Beach (“Flags of Our Fathers”), Simon Baker (“Smoke Signals”), and Graham Greene (Oscar nominee for “Dances with Wolves”), alongside key crew members, the film resonates with a powerful narrative.
Graham Greene expressed, “Upon reading the script, I recognized the importance of sharing this story. Land rights have been systematically stripped from our people, and exploitation has been pervasive over the years.” Patel affirmed, “The Birds Who Face Mortality” weaves a touching tale against the backdrop of industrial progress and its repercussions on indigenous communities. Well-versed in the subject matter, Patel invested years in researching before greenlighting the project. The script, offering inclusivity and a journey of self-discovery, struck a chord with actors like Adam Beach and Graham Greene, prompting their immediate commitment to the project.
With a lineup featuring notable indigenous talents, the film is primed for an international festival circuit, promising a compelling exploration of societal and personal dynamics amid industrial development.
