Kathy Chow, a prominent figure in Hong Kong’s entertainment industry during the 1990s, has passed away at the age of 57. The sad news was reported by Hong Kong’s public broadcaster RTHK and confirmed through a poignant Weibo post by Chow’s mother. Kathy succumbed to Lupus Erythematosus on Monday, marking the end of an era for the acclaimed actress.
Known by various names such as Chow Hoi Mei and Zhou Hai-mei, Kathy proudly identified herself as of ethnic Manchu descent. Her journey into the spotlight began in 1985 as a participant in the Miss Hong Kong pageant, subsequently establishing herself as a versatile entertainer, excelling in both singing and acting.
During her early career, Chow was closely associated with Hong Kong’s primary broadcaster, Television Broadcasts (TVB), where she gained fame for her roles in popular series like “Time Before Time,” “Breaking Point,” and “Looking Back in Anger.” Later, she shifted her allegiance to rival broadcaster ATV, remaining with them until 2001, after which she redirected her focus towards new opportunities in mainland China.
Although she ventured into new territories, Kathy made a notable return to TVB in 2008, featuring in the sequel to “The Academy” and “On the First Beat.” However, her most recognized role remains that of Zhou Zhiruo in the 1994 Taiwanese rendition of the martial heroes TV series “The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber.”
Her final film credit, a lead role and producer in the 2021 action comedy “Heroes Return,” directed by Yip Wing-kin, showcased her enduring talent.
Expressing heartfelt sentiments on Weibo, Kathy Chow’s mother conveyed her wish for her daughter to find happiness in the afterlife. Kathy, who is not known to have married or had children, leaves behind a legacy of remarkable contributions to the entertainment world.
