South Africa’s Quizzical Pictures has given the green light to an eight-part crime series titled “Murder By The Sea.”
This gripping narrative unfolds in Blaasgat, an imaginary coastal town distinguished by its colossal blowhole. The story kicks off with the mysterious death of Lennart Cato, a local success story discovered lifeless inside a papier-mâché whale on the inauguration of a Whale Museum he’s bankrolling. Seeking answers, the community turns to Lawrence Mantooth, a retired veteran actor renowned for his role as detective Pericles van Breda in an 80s TV show. Blurring the line between fiction and reality, Lawrence frequently aids locals with their minor puzzles. Now, with a murder in their midst, he becomes the go-to person to unravel the mystery. Yet, the true sleuth in Blaasgat is none other than Lawrence’s astute wife, Dawn Mantooth-Solomon.
Currently in the developmental phase, “Murder By The Sea” is under the skilled pen of writer Darrel Bristow-Bovey, who doubles as the series’ executive producer. The show is built upon an original concept by Bristow-Bovey and Joanna Simon. Bristow-Bovey, known for his work on Quizzical’s “White Lies” featuring Natalie Dormer, was recognized as one of Variety’s buzzworthy titles at Mipcom. This seasoned writer, alongside Quizzical producer Nimrod Geva, previously presented the crime thriller “Paradys” at Series Mania 2022, securing the Best Project Award.
Quizzical recently wrapped up Season 2 of the crime thriller “Reyka,” starring Kim Engelbrecht. The first season of “Reyka” achieved success globally, selling to over 140 territories, earning two International Emmy Award nominations, and securing four South African Film and Television Awards. Both “Reyka” and “White Lies” were produced for Fremantle and M-Net.
The unveiling of “Murder By The Sea” to the international co-production market is set to take place at Content London next week, coinciding with the spotlight on “White Lies” as a Hot Property.

Co-founder and creative director of Quizzical Pictures, Harriet Gavshon, highlighted the growing popularity of cozy crime with international broadcasters and streamers. Anticipating positive responses from potential co-production partners, Gavshon emphasized South Africa’s appeal as a filming destination, citing the skilled talent pool, production efficiencies, favorable weather, and picturesque locations like the Garden Route.
Darrel Bristow-Bovey, a highly acclaimed South African writer, emphasized his enjoyment in crafting the world of “Murder By The Sea.” He praised Quizzical for their commitment to authentically entertaining contemporary South African stories, expressing pride in his association with the visionary team.
In addition to his work on “Murder By The Sea,” Bristow-Bovey’s impressive track record includes multiple South African Film and Television Awards, and he recently penned the hit Netflix romantic comedy “A Sunday Affair” (2023).
