The 2023 edition of Focus – World Film Market Trends reports that box office revenue in the EU and the U.K. rose by 70% in 2022, totaling €5.1 billion ($5.57 billion). Nonetheless, this is still 28% below pre-pandemic levels. The Cannes film market receives the report every year.
In 2022, “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” and “Minions: The Rise of Gru” were the most popular movies in Europe, selling a combined total of 95.2 million tickets. The number of cinema-goers in the EU and the U.K. rose by 63% from 2021 to an estimated 657 million in 2022, equivalent to 67% of the average pre-pandemic admission level between 2017 and 2019, according to data.
The report states that European films experienced growth in both performance and market share, rising from 26.8% to 28.4% in 2022. Furthermore, film production in the EU and U.K. continued to increase and reached the second highest level in recent history.
The total number of cinema screens in the EU and the U.K. was 32,526 in 2022, which is 300 less than in 2019.
